This gem’s menu shines with inventive, flavor-packed dishes that are perfect for sharing or indulging solo, and an inviting atmosphere that effortlessly blends cozy indoor charm with a breezy, shaded outdoor patio.
Kinda Tropical’s culinary offerings focus on playful, bold flavors that excite the palate. Their Curly Fries, paired with rich garlic aioli and smoky, spicy ketchup, deliver a perfect balance of crispy texture and creamy dips, raising the humble fry to crave-worthy heights for just $7.00. For something with a touch of Caribbean flair, the Cuban Yucca Fries are tossed in aromatic spices and served alongside a vibrant jalapeño avocado dip—each bite crispy, earthy, and enlivened by a mellow heat. Not to be missed are the Chips & Queso, a luscious combination of guacamole, charred tomatillo, fresh cilantro, and a subtle heat from hot sesame oil, elegantly balancing silky cheese with refreshing zest.
The menu's attention to bold, colorful ingredients extends to unique choices like the Sriracha Carrot Hummus, blending garbanzo beans, carrot sweetness, and bright yellow bird sriracha for a dip that is both familiar and intriguingly new. Light yet robust flavors echo throughout the selections, making Kinda Tropical a perfect stop whether you’re craving a midday snack or a lively evening out.
What truly sets Kinda Tropical apart is its ambiance—a carefully cultivated blend of cozy and cool. The inviting outdoor garden, shaded by a majestic red oak and dotted with fans to keep the Texas heat at bay, creates an intimate yet lively space where friends gather over refreshing hibiscus tea and creative cocktails. Live music events, like the Louisiana Surf Dept’s sets mentioned by patrons, add a layer of communal joy that transforms a simple happy hour into an event to remember.
Customer feedback highlights the spot’s generous hospitality and vibrant atmosphere. Natalie B praises the “top notch” service and the unbeatable pairing of fries and queso during happy hour, while Greg Hitt recommends the smoked turkey and sweet potato bowl for lunch, applauding the friendly bar staff and the serene outdoor vibe. The flavorful botanical backdrop—even including the charming local sparrows who frequent the native grapevine fence—adds a natural shelter and subtle soundtrack to each visit, crafting an experience that feels both authentically Austin and downright welcoming.
Whether you’re seeking an energizing pre-dinner drink, a fun place to unwind with friends, or a culinary adventure with fresh, exciting dishes, Kinda Tropical offers a distinct taste of Austin’s eclectic dining scene. Such a cool place! Went for happy hour and they have some amazing deals. The outside patio is cozy and a good place to meet friends. The fries and the queso were to die for and the hibiscus tea is was unlimited. Definitely going back here again! Service was top notch too.

Had a great relaxing lunch in the outdoor seating area at Kinda Tropical. My wife and I shared the yucca fries, and the smoked turkey and sweet potato bowl. Both were excellent. The staff at the bar were awesome and friendly and same with the guy circulating in the Seating area. Lots of fans to keep everybody somewhat cool, and a giant red oak tree providing shade, along with umbrellas over some of the tables. The outdoor seating area is set back from the street a bit and surrounded partially by vines and plants. Pleasant environment.

Vibes are 10/10!! Stumbled on this place to get drinks before dinner, and most definitely will be going back. We didn’t get food, but the menu items looked great. They had a live band, the Louisiana Surf Dept, in the back garden area, and it was the perfect Thursday afternoon!

We visited Kinda Tropical for lunch as a group of three and had a great experience. The place has a cozy, laid-back vibe with a nice dining space and a welcoming backyard that adds to the charm. We tried the chicken sandwich, Thai coconut salad, and sesame salad. The chicken sandwich was decent, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for us, so I’d give it 3 stars. The Thai coconut salad was flavorful and refreshing, earning a solid 4 stars. The real standout was the sesame salad, which was fresh, well-balanced, and absolutely delicious – definitely deserving of 5 stars. Overall, Kinda Tropical offers a relaxed atmosphere and some standout dishes that make it worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for a chill spot to enjoy a meal with friends.

Get the yucca fries. And be prepared for very friendly sparrows . Really hope this place keeps the native grapevine growing on its back fence. It provides such an ugly lovely shelter for the sparrows and blocked the view way better than the star Jasmine

My kids and I shared a burger, curly fries, and fruit bowl. The burger was excellent and both sides were large quantities and very tasty. Also had a good cold brew coffee and OJ for the toddler. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Inside and outside spaces both seemed good; we chose AC. Everything gave a chill and positive feel, but our drinks came out before we left the counter and the meal was out rapidly - but clearly fresh. Great lunch spot.

First time here and really like this space. Converted gas station. Lots of seating inside and tons outside in break. Great looking area. Smoking friendly outside. That said, I ordered the breakfast tacos and they were quite poor. Flour tortillas weren't warmed up or crisped and really need it. A little too thin and lacked flavor. Had bacon and egg and fake chorizo and egg. Nether filling was great, but not bad. Bacon one needed more filling. Rating this a 4 star because I really like the vibe of this place and my friends did was better. I'll come again. But... I won't get these tacos again.

Kinda Tropical is everything you want in a chill Austin hangout spot. The vibe is laid-back but full of character — think tropical patio meets artsy industrial with plants everywhere and colorful touches that feel super inviting. The food? Absolutely hits the spot. Their small plates are perfect for sharing, and the flavors are fresh and creative. I especially loved the fries with house-made dipping sauces — simple, but done right. Great cocktails, too! You can tell they care about what they’re serving. It’s also surprisingly spacious, with both indoor and patio seating, making it ideal for any kind of hang — solo work session, date night, or catching up with friends. And bonus: it’s wheelchair accessible and open until midnight, which is a rare combo. If you’re anywhere near East 7th, don’t miss this place. It’s got that effortlessly cool Austin vibe down to a science.
